A useless palm-sized toy designed to spin with little effort had taken over the world, crawling fast like wildfire. The fidget spinner, a simple mechanical toy with a bearing in the middle, is the 2017 must-have toy for every kid (well that’s how it looks like). It is popular among school children but teens and young adults are joining in the craze. Want to know more about this trending toy? We have a list of fast fact you might want to check out.
1. The invention dates back to 1990s
The original toy was invented in 1993 by Catherine Hettinger. During that time, Catherine was suffering from myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disorder that causes the muscle to weaken. It was difficult to play with her daughter thus she invented the toy so she and her daughter can do an activity together.
2. The inventor isn’t making money from her invention
Hettinger can’t afford the patent renewal fee of $400 in 2005. Even if she had renewed her patent, it would’ve expired in 2014. And because she wasn’t able to pay the patent fee, Hasbro stopped the production and the project was forgotten. The modern fidget spinner inventor is unknown thus no one really gets rich with the boom of this toy.
